Nostalgia Machine: Re-watching The X-Files

The Belle Jar

I’ve been re-watching The X-Files since I’ve been sick, and it’s weirdly been more emotional than I thought it would be. I mean, yes, I snarkily posted this mini-review on Facebook:

So the x-files is basically a show set in the far distant past, back when they didn’t have cell phones or digital cameras. It centres around a 15 year old boy with daddy issues named Fox Mulder. He sulks around and breaks rules and believes in every ridiculous thing ever and uses his Feelings and Troubled Past to justify everything he does. He has a lot of Feelings, by the way. The show also features an actual bonafide adult named Dana Scully who is literally the most patient, tolerant person on the planet and also understands how things like Science and Logic work.

And I still stand by all of that.

But, still.

Earlier in the week we discussed how song writing or lyrics can compare to poetry. I think everyone can agree that song writing is poetry, so there is a complete comparison between the two. Song writing can tell storys and can express emotion. It can paint a picture in your head and leave you wondering what the true meaning behind the words are.
Which is the same with poetry. Its the writers goal to express emotion and share a meaning with the reader/listener.While sometimes only the writer can hold the true meaning or reason of the writing others can give it their own meaning and compare it to their own situations no matter what it may be. Thats the beauty of it

I feel like everyone should have a creative outlook on life. Even if its a minor thing to that person. One should look at things twice and look at things in multiple perspectives. You can be creative with practically everything. Theres no reason why anyone should be bored. Ever. But it happens, thats when you gotta be creative.
Some take part in artforms. Drawing,Music,Painting, etc.but thats definitely not for everyone, those things take time and alot of effort. Not everyone shares the same interests and are into the same things, i get that. But if you dont express yourself then whats the point? Everyones unique and everyone deserves to be thought of for what they truly are, not what they appear or seem to be. So everyone should let people know what they truly feel like and not hold back. Be creative.

Its Simple

If your not happy, change it. Surround yourself with those you care about and those that care about you. Live carelessy. When i say carelessly i mean it in a way of not caring what others think. Do what makes you happy and dont let anyone get in the way of that. If someone is willing to take away something you love then you must ask yourself which is more important.
There are always options and possibilitys, just gotta think about it. Be creative. Take risks and dont hold back. And most importantly just be yourself, dont let others influence your mind and your choices. Be self reliant. There are people who arent happy and intend on taking it out on others but those people have the same choices you do. They can change at any moment, some just need reassurance.

Out There

I wanna travel. Anywhere and everywhere, i think this is mostly due to my lack of traveling considering ive only been out of the state about 5 times. I want to see whats out there. From isolated beaches to packed cities i will go anywhere. This small town keeps me constantly thinking about whats out there and how i could make better use of my time other than sitting around being bored.
I can honestly say my plans after graduating revolve more around travel and experiences other than attending school. Especcially instead of attending school immediately. I wanna see what its like to be somewhere completely different. Different cultures, different beliefs, different points of view i want to see it all. Hopefully i will at least get a glimpse of what i wanna see.

Fig. Lang.

I feel like figurative language is incredibly vital in a work of literature. For me personally it adds to my interest while reading. It keeps me wondering and constantly trying to figure things out. Whether or not things should be taken literally or if one thing represents another. The possibilitys are endless and in some cases the true 100 percent meaning of things could only be interpreted by the writer.
You have to be aware when reading things full of metaphorical meanings and such. For most things arent what they are clearly stated, you have to be creative and keep an open mind. Do these things and understanding these works that consist of such will become more of an entertainment than an assignment. See things for what they are not.

Photography to me is one of the most interesting things in the world. The fact that you can save a moment forever physically is amazing. It can be of anything, anywhere, at anytime and will still be linked to one single moment that you can never go back to. Although i dont own any high grade cameras i feel like film photography will always be a better option rather than digital.
With film you can hold that picture, its the raw image of what was once there at a specific time at an exact moment. With digital its just a bunch of pixels combined to bring together an image on a screen.
It doesn’t have the “soul” that film does, the natural feel to it. Although i appreciate any form of photography i will always choose film over digital. Truly the best invention ever made.

When first discussing transcendentalism in class i didn’t expect much. Just a big word that wouldn’t contribute to a thing to me. Turns out i was wrong, transcendentalism is revolutionary. its beliefs were made up of things that were despised upon during its time. It suggested that people be self reliant and independent.
To exist without orgainzations (such as dedications to religion or political parties) and be themselves. The belief was that these organizations corrupted the purity of an individual. Personally I believe that transcendentalism was a brilliant thing. To let people know that its alright to be themselves and not have to exist in a group of people who push things on to you. That its alright to look at things differently.

Recently we watched Moby Dick in class. At first i was expecting a stupid, boring whale hunt that displayed no emotion whatsoever. But to my surprise the movie was very intriguing. The first impression i got of the movie was what i described i was expecting but as their journey to hunt down this beast furthered i began to see something.
I examined the captain’s sheer obsession to hunt down this whale. He was willing to risk everything just to kill this thing. It drove him mad, to insanity. His entire life revolved around the giant whale and in the end he lost everything due to obsession.

Friend Or Poe

Edgar Allen Poe is one of the most known writers of all time. Recently we have read a few of his works and discussed them in class and they are pure entertainment even for those who arent much on writing (myself being an example.) His work is so dark and melancholic. It tells of violence and disturbance, almost sickening because of poe’s talent to display such a vivid image in the readers head.
His use of detail draws the reader in and captivates them. its almost as if a movie is playing in your head. i personally believe his dark, twisted works are the root of that style of writing. hes definitely played a major role in the world of literature.
